CD REVIEWS
Charity CDs: Worthy sounds, worthy causes
AND FOR THE TSUNAMI VICTIMS
Various artists, "Hands Across the Water." $15. Out December 20th. The title refers not only to the CD's purpose of providing relief to the children affected by the Southeast Asian tsunami of December 2004, but also to the connections between Nashville and the other side of the Atlantic. France-based banjo player Paul Rodden and two members of the Irish band Danú contribute to the haunting lead track, "This Beggar's Heart," written and sung by Nashville songwriter Darrell Scott. The song's intimate beauty belies the fact that it was recorded in three different locations. It's a musical testament to the power of disparate and far-flung individuals coming together for a single purpose, and a perfect metaphor for a fund-raising effort like this. That tune alone is worth the price of this disc, but you also get Altan teamed with Vince Gill, duets by Jim Lauderdale and Maura O'Connell, and John Prine and his Donegal-born wife, Fiona, and a sweet meeting of Irish-American quintet Solas and Mindy Smith. Verdict: Buy it.
